Youth sailing

CDU supporting student access to sailing

SailingSailing is a healthy, social and active way meet new people and get out onto the water.

CDU and Rotary are offering a sail training program to CDU students as a way to encourage new people into the sport.

It is also an opportunity for CDU students to be involved in mentoring and coaching children who are socially challenged.

Sponsored by CDU, The Rotary Club of Darwin North, NT Government, Northern Paediatricians and a few private caring individuals the program now offers a team of two fast off the beach catamarans. These are Hobie 16s with trapeze and spinnakers making them an enjoyable and interesting sailing craft.

For CDU students, your role as the skipper means you're the captain and mentor of your team. You are trained with the opportunity to compete in Darwin Sailing Club Regattas.

You will also use your mentor skills to coach young people who social difficulties and assist in training them to be competent and confident young people.

To join the program you need an interest in sailing (you get free training), a working with young people OCHRE card. Contact the team captain Peter Clouting on email pclouting82@gmail.com.

There is a good social life for CDU students in the program where you get to participate in Rotary functions, supported with club memberships and get opportunities to sail/overnight cruise on larger craft.

Darwin harbour is akin to a marine park – you see lots of wildlife.

For Young people who are experiencing difficulties at home and school (health/social) you can be assessed by Northern Paediatrics as to your suitability to join the program. You are then put through a formal sail training program sponsored by Rotary Club Darwin North and once this is complete you join a Rotakat skipper to race or train each weekend.

The CDU Sailing and RotaKat program is part of the Charles Darwin University's Community engagement program, sailing at the Darwin Sailing Club, and a youth leadership program run by The Rotary Club of Darwin North.

It is a program to assist young adult membership of Rotary and the Darwin Sailing Club while participating in CDU community engagement with an exciting and philanthropic activity.

Additional sponsors are sought to assist with final costs. Contact us for further information.
